The Greenville South Carolina Temple is one of the newest temples announced by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Located in the heart of Upstate South Carolina, the temple will become the second temple in South Carolina, bringing temple blessings closer to members throughout the Greenville area and neighboring western North Carolina.
A Brief History
President Russell M. Nelson announced the Greenville South Carolina Temple during the April 2025 General Conference on April 6, 2025. At the time of the announcement, South Carolina was home to nearly 46,000 members of the Church in approximately 85 congregations. The new temple reflects the continued growth of the Church throughout the southeastern United States.
On May 26, 2026, the Church announced the temple site on an 8.8-acre property located just south of the intersection of Independence Boulevard (Ponders Road) and Roper Mountain Road in Greenville. The following day, an official rendering of the temple was released, showing a beautiful single-story temple with a single attached tower and elegant classical architectural details. The temple is currently in the planning stage, and a groundbreaking date has not yet been announced.
What Makes This Temple Unique?
One of the Greenville South Carolina Temple's most significant features is that it will be only the second temple in South Carolina, joining the Columbia South Carolina Temple, which has served members since 1999. The new temple will dramatically reduce travel time for members living in Greenville, Spartanburg, Simpsonville, Asheville, and surrounding communities.
The temple's location in Upstate South Carolina places it near one of the fastest-growing regions in the Southeast. Greenville has become known for its beautiful downtown, nearby Blue Ridge Mountains, and thriving economy, making it an ideal location to serve Church members throughout the region.
Another unique feature is the temple's elegant architectural style. The official rendering shows a design with classical columns, a decorative entrance, and a graceful white tower that complements the surrounding landscape while maintaining the timeless beauty found in modern temples.
Visiting the Temple
The future Greenville South Carolina Temple will be located south of the intersection of Independence Boulevard (Ponders Road) and Roper Mountain Road in Greenville, South Carolina. Because the temple is still in the planning phase, construction has not yet begun. Before its dedication, the Church will host a public open house, giving everyone the opportunity to tour the temple and learn more about its sacred purpose.
