Grand Rapids Michigan Temple: History, Unique Features, and Visitor Guide

The Grand Rapids Michigan Temple is one of the newest temples under construction by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Located in Grand Rapids, the temple will become the second temple in Michigan and will serve members throughout western Michigan, providing a much closer place of worship for many who have previously traveled to the Detroit Michigan Temple.

A Brief History

President Russell M. Nelson announced the Grand Rapids Michigan Temple during the October 2022 General Conference on October 2, 2022. At the time of the announcement, Michigan was home to more than 45,000 members of the Church in 96 congregations. The announcement reflected the continued growth of the Church and the desire to bring temples closer to members across the state.

The temple site at 2400 Forest Hill Avenue SE was announced on November 7, 2022. An official rendering was released in November 2023, with an updated design unveiled in November 2024. Groundbreaking services were held on December 7, 2024, with Elder Mathias Held presiding. Construction is progressing steadily, with exterior stonework, walkways, and landscaping continuing as the temple moves toward completion. Open house and dedication dates have not yet been announced.

What Makes This Temple Unique?

One of the Grand Rapids Michigan Temple's most unique features is that it will become only the second temple ever built in Michigan, joining the Detroit Michigan Temple, which has served members since 1999. The new temple will significantly reduce travel for Latter-day Saints living across western and northern Michigan.

The temple is designed with a beautiful single attached end tower rising approximately 95 feet above the surrounding landscape. Its elegant architecture and carefully planned landscaping will create a peaceful setting for worship while blending naturally with the surrounding wooded area.

Another interesting aspect of the project is its location in Michigan's second-largest city. Grand Rapids is known for its vibrant arts community, beautiful parks, and strong manufacturing history, making the temple an important addition to a thriving region that continues to grow.

Visiting the Temple

The Grand Rapids Michigan Temple is being constructed at 2400 Forest Hill Avenue SE in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Because construction is still underway, the temple is not yet open to the public. Before its dedication, the Church will host a public open house, giving visitors the opportunity to tour the temple and learn more about its sacred purpose.
