Announcement
The Goiânia Brazil Temple was announced by President Russell M. Nelson during the October 2023 General Conference on October 1, 2023. It will become the first temple in the Brazilian state of Goiás and the 23rd announced temple in Brazil at the time of its announcement. Goiânia, the capital and largest city of Goiás, is home to approximately 2.9 million people in its metropolitan area.
Current Status
The temple is currently in the planning and approval phase. On July 13, 2026, the Church announced the temple site as a 5.54-acre property located northwest of the intersection of Avenida Rio Verde and Rua Capitão Breno in the Loteamento Faicalville neighborhood of Goiânia. Plans call for a single-story temple containing approximately 18,850 square feet.
At this time, no official exterior rendering has been released, and no groundbreaking date has been announced. Construction has not yet begun.
What to Watch for Next
The next major milestones will be the release of the temple's official exterior rendering and the announcement of a groundbreaking ceremony. Once construction begins, the Church will provide additional updates before announcing dates for the public open house and temple dedication.
Nearest Operating Temple
Until the Goiânia Brazil Temple is completed, members in Goiás are primarily served by the Brasília Brazil Temple in Brazil's Federal District. The new temple will significantly reduce travel for Latter-day Saints throughout central Brazil and will become the first house of the Lord in Goiás.
Final Thoughts
The Goiânia Brazil Temple represents another important milestone in the continued growth of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Brazil. As the first temple planned for Goiás, it will bring temple blessings closer to thousands of members across central Brazil. Although the project is still in its early planning stages, the announced location marks an exciting step toward the future construction and dedication of this long-awaited temple.
