Fukuoka Japan Temple: History, Architecture, and Travel Guide

Where It's Located

The Fukuoka Japan Temple is located at 5-18-7 Jigyohama, Chuo-ku in Fukuoka, Japan. The temple sits near the coast in western Fukuoka and serves members throughout the islands of Kyushu, Okinawa, and other areas of southern Japan. The temple complex also includes a meetinghouse and patron housing.

Getting There

The nearest major airport is Fukuoka Airport (FUK), one of Japan's busiest domestic and international airports. Travelers from the United States typically connect through Tokyo (Haneda or Narita), Osaka (Kansai), Seoul, or Taipei before continuing to Fukuoka. From the airport, the temple is about a 20-minute drive, and it is also accessible by Fukuoka's public transportation system.

A Bit of History

The Fukuoka Japan Temple was announced by President Gordon B. Hinckley on May 7, 1998. It became the second temple in Japan and the first temple built in southern Japan, providing much easier access to temple worship for members who had previously traveled long distances to the Tokyo Japan Temple.

Groundbreaking and site dedication took place on March 20, 1999, with Elder Yoshihiko Kikuchi presiding. Following a public open house, President Gordon B. Hinckley dedicated the temple on June 11, 2000, making it the 88th operating temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The temple serves members throughout Kyushu, Okinawa, Yamaguchi, Hiroshima, and Shikoku, greatly reducing travel time for Latter-day Saints across southern Japan.

Design and Architecture

The Fukuoka Japan Temple contains approximately 10,700 square feet of floor space. Its design features a single attached spire topped with an angel Moroni statue and reflects a blend of traditional temple architecture with clean, contemporary lines that complement its urban setting.

Inside, the temple includes two ordinance rooms, two sealing rooms, and one baptistry. The carefully landscaped grounds and elegant architecture provide a peaceful atmosphere in one of Japan's largest cities.

Final Thoughts

The Fukuoka Japan Temple represents an important milestone in the growth of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Japan. As the first temple in southern Japan, it has brought temple blessings much closer to thousands of members throughout the region for more than two decades. Its beautiful coastal location and historic significance make it a memorable destination for those visiting Latter-day Saint temples across Asia.
