The Fresno California Temple was the first temple built in California's Central Valley and the fourth temple constructed in the state. Located in northwest Fresno, the temple has served Latter-day Saints throughout central California since its dedication in 2000. Its elegant granite exterior, peaceful gardens, and convenient location have made it a cherished house of the Lord for members across the San Joaquin Valley.
A Brief History
The First Presidency announced the Fresno California Temple on January 8, 1999, during President Gordon B. Hinckley's historic temple-building program that brought smaller temples closer to members around the world. Groundbreaking services were held on March 20, 1999, with Elder John B. Dickson presiding. Interestingly, the groundbreaking took place on the same day as groundbreaking ceremonies for three other temples around the world.
Before its dedication, the temple welcomed approximately 51,000 visitors during a 10-day public open house. President Gordon B. Hinckley dedicated the temple on April 9, 2000, making it the 78th dedicated temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
What Makes This Temple Unique?
One of the Fresno California Temple's most distinctive features is its beautiful white Sierra granite exterior, quarried in nearby Raymond, California. Using locally sourced granite gives the temple a timeless appearance while connecting it to California's rich natural resources.
The temple was also the first temple built specifically to serve California's fertile Central Valley, dramatically reducing travel for members who previously journeyed to Oakland or Los Angeles. Its location allows members from communities such as Fresno, Merced, Visalia, Hanford, and Porterville to attend the temple much more frequently.
Although it is one of the Church's smaller temples, its traditional design features a graceful single attached spire topped with the angel Moroni. Beautiful landscaping, mature trees, colorful flowers, and peaceful walkways create a welcoming atmosphere for visitors throughout the year.
Visiting the Temple
The Fresno California Temple is located at 6290 N. Valentine Avenue in Fresno, California. The temple does not have a visitors' center, arrival center, patron housing, or an on-site distribution center. However, the beautifully maintained grounds are open to the public and provide a peaceful place to walk, reflect, and enjoy the temple's tranquil setting.
