The Fort Bend Texas Temple is one of the newest temples announced by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Located in Missouri City, just southwest of Houston, the temple will become the ninth temple in Texas and the second temple serving the Greater Houston area. Once completed, it will make temple worship more convenient for thousands of Latter-day Saints living in one of the fastest-growing regions in the state.
A Brief History
President Russell M. Nelson announced the temple during the April 2024 General Conference on April 7, 2024. The project was originally announced as the Houston Texas South Temple, reflecting its location in the southern portion of the Houston metropolitan area.
On October 20, 2025, the Church announced the temple site north of Fort Bend Parkway on the west side of Sienna Parkway in Missouri City. On February 23, 2026, the temple was officially renamed the Fort Bend Texas Temple to better reflect its location within Fort Bend County. The temple is currently in the planning stage, and a groundbreaking date has not yet been announced.
What Makes This Temple Unique?
One of the most unique aspects of the Fort Bend Texas Temple is its name change. Few temples have been renamed after their original announcement. The transition from the Houston Texas South Temple to the Fort Bend Texas Temple better represents the county where the temple will be built and its growing community.
The temple will also become the second operating temple serving the Houston metropolitan area, helping relieve demand at the Houston Texas Temple, which has served members since 2000. As Church membership throughout southeast Texas continues to grow, the additional temple will significantly reduce travel times for thousands of members.
Plans call for a beautiful single-story temple featuring a single attached end spire. The 46,000-square-foot building will be constructed on a 15.7-acre property and will also include an on-site meetinghouse and an ancillary building, creating a campus that will serve members for generations.
Visiting the Temple
The future Fort Bend Texas Temple will be located north of Fort Bend Parkway on the west side of Sienna Parkway in Missouri City, Texas. Since construction has not yet begun, visitors can follow the temple's progress as additional milestones are announced. Before the temple is dedicated, the Church will host a public open house so everyone can tour the building and learn more about the purpose of temples.
