The Flagstaff Arizona Temple is one of the newest temples announced by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Once completed, it will become the ninth temple announced for Arizona, bringing temple blessings closer to members living in northern Arizona. Located among the world's largest ponderosa pine forest and near the base of Humphreys Peak, the temple will serve members across a large geographic region that has traditionally required significant travel to attend the temple.
A Brief History
President Russell M. Nelson announced the Flagstaff Arizona Temple during the April 2025 General Conference on April 6, 2025. At the time of the announcement, Arizona was home to approximately 450,000 members of the Church in more than 925 congregations, reflecting the continued growth of the Church throughout the state.
On January 20, 2026, the Church announced the temple site at the southwest corner of Butler Avenue and South Fourth Street in Flagstaff. Plans call for a single-story temple of approximately 18,850 square feet on a 10.43-acre property, along with an ancillary building. The temple is currently in the planning phase, and a groundbreaking date has not yet been announced. An official exterior rendering has also not yet been released.
What Makes This Temple Unique?
The Flagstaff Arizona Temple will become the first temple in northern Arizona outside of Snowflake, making temple worship much more convenient for members in Flagstaff and surrounding communities. Many members in the region have previously traveled several hours to attend the Snowflake, Phoenix, or Mesa temples.
Another unique feature is its remarkable location. Flagstaff sits at an elevation of approximately 6,828 feet, making this one of the highest-elevation temples in the United States. The city is surrounded by towering ponderosa pine forests and is just a short distance from Humphreys Peak, Arizona's tallest mountain. These stunning natural surroundings will provide a beautiful backdrop for the future temple.
The temple also represents the continued expansion of temple blessings throughout Arizona. As the Church grows, additional temples help reduce travel times and allow more members to worship closer to home.
Visiting the Temple
The future Flagstaff Arizona Temple will be located at the southwest corner of Butler Avenue and South Fourth Street in Flagstaff, Arizona. Since the temple is still in the planning stages, construction has not yet begun. Before the temple is dedicated, the Church will host a public open house, allowing visitors to tour the building and learn more about the purpose of temples.
