The Fairbanks Alaska Temple is one of the newest temples under construction by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Once completed, it will become the second temple in Alaska and the northernmost temple in the world. Located in Fairbanks, the temple will make temple worship much more accessible for members living across Alaska's vast interior, where travel to an operating temple has often required hundreds of miles of driving or air travel.
A Brief History
President Russell M. Nelson announced the Fairbanks Alaska Temple during the October 2023 General Conference on October 1, 2023. At the time of the announcement, Alaska was home to approximately 35,000 Latter-day Saints in more than 80 congregations. The announcement came as the Anchorage Alaska Temple began a major reconstruction project, further demonstrating the Church's commitment to serving members throughout the state.
On November 25, 2024, the Church announced the temple site at 725 Dennison Court along Geist Road in Fairbanks. Plans call for a single-story temple of approximately 10,000 square feet on a 7.59-acre property, along with a meetinghouse and ancillary building. Groundbreaking services were held on September 27, 2025, with Elder Peter M. Johnson presiding, and construction is now underway.
What Makes This Temple Unique?
The Fairbanks Alaska Temple will hold the distinction of being the northernmost temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Its location reflects the Church's ongoing effort to bring temples closer to members, even in some of the world's most remote regions.
Another unique feature is its setting in Alaska's Interior, where long winters, dramatic landscapes, and the famous midnight sun and aurora borealis make Fairbanks unlike almost any other temple location. The official rendering shows a beautiful single attached central spire with a classic design that complements the natural surroundings.
The temple will also serve members who previously traveled many hours to the Anchorage Alaska Temple. For many families across Interior Alaska, this new temple will significantly reduce travel time and make temple attendance more frequent and convenient.
Visiting the Temple
