The Ephraim Utah Temple is the 27th temple built in Utah and the second temple in Sanpete County, joining the historic Manti Utah Temple. Located in the heart of Ephraim, the temple was built to preserve the historic character of the Manti Temple while providing additional temple capacity for the growing number of members in central Utah. Its beautiful pioneer-inspired design reflects the rich heritage of the Sanpete Valley.
A Brief History
President Russell M. Nelson announced the Ephraim Utah Temple on May 1, 2021, during a special press conference regarding the future renovation of the Manti Utah Temple. Rather than significantly altering the historic Manti Temple, Church leaders chose to preserve its pioneer craftsmanship and construct a new temple in nearby Ephraim.
The temple site at the intersection of 200 North and 400 East was announced on October 22, 2021, and an exterior rendering followed in March 2022. President Nelson personally presided over the groundbreaking ceremony on August 27, 2022, noting that his own family has deep roots in the Sanpete Valley. The temple will be dedicated on October 11, 2026, following a public open house held from September 2–19, 2026.
What Makes This Temple Unique?
Perhaps the most unique aspect of the Ephraim Utah Temple is why it was built. Instead of replacing or dramatically modernizing the historic Manti Utah Temple, the Church chose to preserve one of its most treasured pioneer temples while constructing a second temple nearby. This decision allows both temples to serve members while protecting an important piece of Church history.
The temple's architecture draws inspiration from the historic Ephraim Tabernacle and other pioneer-era buildings in Sanpete County. Its elegant design features two attached end towers, a style rarely seen in modern temples, giving it a distinctive appearance that blends beautifully with the surrounding community.
Another meaningful feature is President Nelson's personal connection to the area. During the groundbreaking ceremony, he shared that his mother was born in Ephraim, his father in Manti, and that many of his grandparents and great-grandparents lived in the Sanpete Valley. This deep family heritage made the groundbreaking especially meaningful.
Visiting the Temple
The Ephraim Utah Temple is located at 200 North 400 East in Ephraim, Utah. The temple does not have a visitors' center, arrival center, temple housing, or an on-site distribution center, though a distribution center is available nearby in Manti. The beautifully landscaped grounds provide a peaceful setting for worship and reflection.
