Announcement
The Eket Nigeria Temple was announced by President Russell M. Nelson during the October 2022 General Conference on October 2, 2022. It will become one of several temples planned for Nigeria, reflecting the remarkable growth of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the country. At the time of the announcement, Nigeria was home to more than 211,000 Latter-day Saints in over 750 congregations.
Current Status
The Eket Nigeria Temple is currently in the planning and approval phase. On April 22, 2025, the Church announced the temple site, which is a 7-acre property located on Eket/Oron Road in the village of Ikot Ibiok, Eket Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. Plans call for a single-story temple of approximately 18,850 square feet along with an on-site meetinghouse. An official exterior rendering has not yet been released, and no groundbreaking date has been announced.
What to Watch for Next
The next major milestone will be the release of the temple's official exterior rendering, followed by the announcement of a groundbreaking ceremony. After construction is complete, the Church will announce dates for the public open house and the temple dedication.
Nearest Operating Temple
Until the Eket Nigeria Temple is completed, members in the region primarily attend the Aba Nigeria Temple, the first operating temple in Nigeria. Additional temples are also under construction or in planning across the country, including the Benin City Nigeria Temple, Lagos Nigeria Temple, Calabar Nigeria Temple, Abuja Nigeria Temple, and Uyo Nigeria Temple, further expanding temple access throughout Nigeria.
Final Thoughts
The Eket Nigeria Temple represents another important milestone in the continued growth of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in West Africa. Although the project is still in its early planning stages, the announced temple site marks significant progress toward bringing temple blessings closer to members in southeastern Nigeria. As additional details are released, the temple will continue to symbolize the Church's expanding presence across the region.
