Edinburgh Scotland Temple: What We Know So Far

Announcement

The Edinburgh Scotland Temple was announced by President Russell M. Nelson during the April 2024 General Conference on April 7, 2024. It will become the first temple in Scotland and the fourth temple in the United Kingdom, joining the London England Temple, Preston England Temple, and the announced Birmingham England Temple. At the time of the announcement, the United Kingdom was home to approximately 185,000 members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in more than 300 congregations.

Current Status

The Edinburgh Scotland Temple is currently in the planning and approval phase. At this time, the Church has not announced an official temple site, has not released an exterior rendering, and has not announced a groundbreaking date. Construction has not yet begun.

What to Watch for Next

The next major milestone will be the announcement of the temple's official location within the Edinburgh area. After that, the Church is expected to release an exterior rendering, announce a groundbreaking ceremony, and begin construction. As the project progresses, future announcements will include details about the public open house and temple dedication.

Nearest Operating Temple

Until the Edinburgh Scotland Temple is completed, members in Scotland continue to travel primarily to the Preston England Temple, with some also attending the London England Temple. Once dedicated, the Edinburgh Scotland Temple will significantly reduce travel for Latter-day Saints throughout Scotland while becoming the country's first house of the Lord.

Final Thoughts

The Edinburgh Scotland Temple represents a historic milestone for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Scotland. As the nation's first temple, it will bring temple blessings much closer to Scottish members who have faithfully traveled to England for many years. Although the project is still in its early planning stages, it reflects the continued growth of the Church and the expanding availability of temples throughout the British Isles.
