The Deseret Peak Utah Temple is the first temple built in Tooele County and the 23rd temple in Utah. Located in Tooele at the base of the Oquirrh Mountains, the temple serves members throughout the Tooele Valley and surrounding communities. Dedicated in 2024, it also holds the distinction of being the 200th operating temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, making it an especially significant milestone in Church history.
A Brief History
President Russell M. Nelson announced a temple for the Tooele Valley during the April 2019 General Conference on April 7, 2019. An initial site was selected in Erda, but after listening to community concerns, the Church relocated the project to Tooele and renamed it the Deseret Peak Utah Temple in January 2021.
Groundbreaking services were held on May 15, 2021, with Elder Brook P. Hales presiding. A 23-day public open house welcomed more than 130,000 visitors before President Russell M. Nelson dedicated the temple on November 10, 2024. The dedication marked the opening of the Church's 200th operating temple.
What Makes This Temple Unique?
The Deseret Peak Utah Temple is best known for becoming the 200th operating temple of the Church. That milestone made its dedication a historic event celebrated by members throughout the world.
The temple's design reflects the natural beauty of the Tooele Valley. Its exterior is clad in glass fiber reinforced concrete, while decorative art glass and interior details feature native plants such as lupine flowers, cliff rose, and salt grass. These local design elements create a beautiful connection between the temple and the surrounding landscape.
Another striking feature is the temple's 182-foot central tower, making it one of the tallest temples in Utah. Situated on a 15.5-acre property, the temple stands prominently against the backdrop of the Oquirrh Mountains and has quickly become a recognizable landmark in Tooele County.
Visiting the Temple
The Deseret Peak Utah Temple is located at 2401 N 400 W in Tooele, Utah. The temple has an on-site distribution center where patrons can purchase temple clothing and garments. Although there is no visitors' center, arrival center, or patron housing, the beautifully landscaped grounds are open to the public and provide a peaceful place to walk, reflect, and enjoy the mountain views.
