Davao Philippines Temple: History, Architecture, and Travel Guide

Where It's Located

The Davao Philippines Temple is located at Ma-a Road and Anahaw Road, Barangay Ma-a, in Davao City, Davao del Sur, Philippines. The temple sits on a 2.7-acre site and includes an arrival center, patron housing, and a distribution center. It serves members throughout Mindanao and is the first temple built on the island.

Getting There

The nearest major airport is Francisco Bangoy International Airport (DVO), also known as Davao International Airport. Travelers from the United States typically connect through major Asian hubs such as Manila, Tokyo, Seoul, Taipei, Hong Kong, or Singapore before continuing to Davao. From the airport, the temple is approximately a 20- to 30-minute drive, depending on traffic.

A Bit of History

The Davao Philippines Temple was announced by President Russell M. Nelson during the October 2018 General Conference. At the time, it became the sixth temple announced for the Philippines and was planned as the first temple in Mindanao, bringing temple blessings much closer to members living in the southern part of the country.

The temple site and official rendering were announced on September 8, 2020. Groundbreaking and site dedication took place on November 14, 2020, with Elder Taniela B. Wakolo presiding. The existing meetinghouse on the property was removed to make way for the temple complex, which also includes a new meetinghouse and patron housing.

Following a public open house from March 26 through April 10, 2026, attended by approximately 30,000 visitors, Elder Dale G. Renlund dedicated the temple on May 3, 2026. It became the 215th operating temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the fifth dedicated temple in the Philippines.

Design and Architecture

The Davao Philippines Temple contains approximately 18,450 square feet of floor space. Its exterior features stone cladding over a cast-in-place concrete frame and is topped with a single attached end tower reaching approximately 122 feet in height. A fiberglass resin dome completes the temple's distinctive architectural profile.

Inside, the temple includes two instruction rooms, two sealing rooms, and one baptistry. The temple's clean, modern design and beautifully landscaped grounds provide a peaceful setting for members throughout Mindanao.

Final Thoughts

The Davao Philippines Temple marks a significant milestone in the history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Philippines. As the first temple built in Mindanao, it has greatly reduced travel for thousands of members in southern Philippines while standing as a symbol of the Church's continued growth in the region. Its beautiful design and historic importance make it a memorable destination for those visiting Latter-day Saint temples throughout Southeast Asia.
