Cusco Peru Temple: History, Architecture, and Travel Guide

Where It's Located

The Cusco Peru Temple is planned for Avenida Arcopata 452 in Cusco, Peru, on a 2.48-acre site. Located in the historic capital of the Inca Empire and one of South America's most visited cities, the temple will serve Latter-day Saints throughout southeastern Peru.

Because the temple is still in the planning phase, it is not yet open for temple worship or public visits.

Getting There

The nearest major airport is Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport (CUZ) in Cusco. Travelers from the United States typically connect through Lima before taking a domestic flight to Cusco. The future temple site is located just a short drive from the airport and is easily accessible from the city's historic center.

A Bit of History

The Cusco Peru Temple was announced by President Russell M. Nelson during the April 2022 General Conference. It will become the fifth temple announced for Peru. At the time of the announcement, Peru was home to approximately 625,000 Latter-day Saints in more than 775 congregations. Missionary work in the country began in 1956.

On January 29, 2024, the First Presidency announced the temple's location on Avenida Arcopata in Cusco. Plans call for a temple of approximately 9,950 square feet. The project is currently in the planning and approval phase, and no groundbreaking date has been announced. An official exterior rendering has also not yet been released.

Design and Architecture

Plans call for a temple containing approximately 9,950 square feet of floor space. Current plans include one instruction room, one sealing room, and one baptistry. The temple site sits at an elevation of approximately 11,333 feet, making it one of the highest-elevation temple sites in the Church.

Since an exterior rendering has not yet been released, architectural details such as exterior materials, landscaping, and design style have not been publicly announced.

Final Thoughts

The Cusco Peru Temple represents another important milestone in the continued growth of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Peru. Once completed, it will provide easier access to temple worship for members throughout southeastern Peru while serving one of the country's most historic and recognizable cities. As the project progresses, future announcements will provide details about the temple's design, groundbreaking, public open house, and dedication.
