Cuernavaca Mexico Temple: History, Architecture, and Travel Guide

Where It's Located

The Cuernavaca Mexico Temple is planned for a 5.36-acre site at the southeast corner of Calle Hernán Cortés and Calle Santa Prisca in the Vista Hermosa neighborhood of Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico. Plans call for the temple to be built on a prominent site in the city, which is often referred to as the "City of Eternal Spring."

Because the temple is still in the planning phase, it is not yet open for temple worship or public visits.

Getting There

The nearest major airport is Benito Juárez International Airport (MEX) in Mexico City, approximately 55 miles (90 km) north of Cuernavaca. Travelers from the United States can fly nonstop to Mexico City from many major U.S. cities before driving or taking ground transportation to Cuernavaca. The future temple site is approximately a 90-minute drive from the airport, depending on traffic.

A Bit of History

The Cuernavaca Mexico Temple was announced by President Russell M. Nelson during the October 2022 General Conference. It will become the first temple in the Mexican state of Morelos and one of the growing number of temples serving members throughout central Mexico. At the time of the announcement, Mexico was home to nearly 1.5 million members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

On January 16, 2024, the Church announced the temple site in the Vista Hermosa neighborhood of Cuernavaca. Later, on December 23, 2024, the official exterior rendering was released, providing the first look at the temple's design. The project is currently in the planning and approval phase, and no groundbreaking date has been announced.

Design and Architecture

Plans call for a single-story temple containing approximately 19,000 square feet of floor space. The design features a single attached central tower and will stand at an elevation of approximately 5,158 feet above sea level.

The released rendering shows a light-colored temple with traditional architectural styling, landscaped grounds, and a prominent central tower. Additional details regarding the interior layout and finish materials have not yet been announced.

Final Thoughts

The Cuernavaca Mexico Temple represents another important milestone in the continued growth of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Mexico. Once completed, it will provide easier access to temple worship for members living in Morelos and surrounding areas while becoming the state's first house of the Lord. As construction progresses, future announcements will provide details about the groundbreaking, public open house, and dedication.
