Cody Wyoming Temple: History, Unique Features, and Visitor Guide

The Cody Wyoming Temple is the third temple built in Wyoming, serving members in the northwestern part of the state and nearby Montana. Located in the scenic community founded by Buffalo Bill Cody and surrounded by breathtaking mountain landscapes, the temple reflects the beauty and pioneer spirit of the American West. Its dedication in 2026 marked another important milestone in the continued growth of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints throughout Wyoming.

A Brief History

President Russell M. Nelson announced the Cody Wyoming Temple during the October 2021 General Conference on October 3, 2021. In March 2023, the Church announced a 4.69-acre site northwest of Skyline Drive and the Cody Canal, with plans for a single-story temple.

Groundbreaking services were held on September 27, 2024, with Elder Steven R. Bangerter presiding. Following a 16-day public open house in August and September 2026, the temple was dedicated on October 25, 2026, becoming Wyoming's third dedicated temple.

What Makes This Temple Unique?

The Cody Wyoming Temple is beautifully situated near the eastern entrance to Yellowstone National Park, surrounded by the rugged mountains and wide-open landscapes that make northwestern Wyoming famous. Its design complements the surrounding scenery with a warm exterior of precast concrete panels and a graceful 101-foot central tower topped by a gold spire.

The temple also has a close connection to the area's rich pioneer and western heritage. Cody was founded by the legendary Buffalo Bill Cody, and the city is home to the Historic Cody Mural and Museum, a Church meetinghouse featuring a large mural depicting scenes from the Restoration and the westward migration of the pioneers. Many visitors enjoy touring both locations during their trip.

Another interesting aspect of the temple is its location at an elevation of more than 5,100 feet, offering spectacular views of Wyoming's mountains and open skies. The peaceful setting makes it one of the most scenic temple locations in the western United States.

Visiting the Temple

The Cody Wyoming Temple is located on Skyline Drive in Cody, Wyoming. While there is no visitors' center or patron housing, the temple grounds provide a peaceful place for reflection and offer beautiful views of the surrounding landscape. Visitors to the area often combine a temple visit with trips to Yellowstone National Park, the Buffalo Bill Center of the West, or the Historic Cody Mural and Museum.
