The Cleveland Ohio Temple is the newest operating temple in Ohio and serves members throughout northeastern Ohio and neighboring areas. Located in Independence, just south of downtown Cleveland, the temple stands only about 20 miles from the historic Kirtland Temple, making it especially meaningful in the history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Dedicated in 2026, it represents the continued growth of the Church in the region.
A Brief History
President Russell M. Nelson announced the Cleveland Ohio Temple during the April 2022 General Conference on April 3, 2022. Later that year, the Church selected an 11.04-acre site on Brecksville Road in Independence, Ohio.
Groundbreaking took place on June 1, 2024, with Elder Vaiangina Sikahema presiding. Following a 15-day public open house in June and July 2026, Elder David A. Bednar dedicated the temple on August 16, 2026, making it the second operating temple in Ohio.
What Makes This Temple Unique?
One of the Cleveland Ohio Temple's most remarkable features is its connection to early Church history. The temple is located just a short drive from the historic Kirtland Temple, where many foundational events of the Restoration took place in the 1830s. This makes northeastern Ohio one of the few places where visitors can experience both an important historic temple and a modern operating temple within the same region.
The temple's design also celebrates Cleveland's architectural heritage. Decorative art glass and interior details draw inspiration from several of the city's iconic buildings, including the Cleveland Trust Building, Cleveland Public Library, Cleveland City Hall, and the Cuyahoga County Courthouse. Throughout the temple, visitors will also notice the white trillium, Ohio's state wildflower, incorporated into artwork and design motifs. The interior color palette reflects the sunrise over Lake Erie with beautiful shades of blue, green, coral, red, and gold.
The exterior is finished with elegant Spanish Burdur Beige marble accented by Brazilian Azul Macaubus marble, while a graceful 100-foot central spire gives the temple a timeless appearance.
Visiting the Temple
The Cleveland Ohio Temple is located at 5997 Brecksville Road in Independence, Ohio. While there is no visitors' center, arrival center, patron housing, or on-site distribution center, the peaceful grounds are open for visitors to enjoy. Its convenient location also makes it easy to include a visit to nearby Church history sites, including the historic Kirtland Temple.
