Ciudad Juárez Mexico Temple: History, Architecture, and Travel Guide

Where It's Located

The Ciudad Juárez Mexico Temple is located at Calle Paraguay #290, Esquina José Borunda, Colonia Partido Romero in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, Mexico. Situated near the U.S.–Mexico border across from El Paso, Texas, the temple sits on a 1.64-acre site and includes an arrival center and a distribution center. It serves members from northern Chihuahua and Far West Texas.

Getting There

The nearest major airport is Abraham González International Airport (CJS) in Ciudad Juárez. Many travelers from the United States also choose to fly into El Paso International Airport (ELP) in Texas, which offers numerous nonstop flights from major U.S. cities. From El Paso, the temple is only a short drive across the international border, while travelers arriving in Ciudad Juárez can typically reach the temple in about 20 minutes from the airport, depending on traffic and border conditions.

A Bit of History

The Ciudad Juárez Mexico Temple was announced by President Gordon B. Hinckley on May 7, 1998, becoming the third temple in Mexico and the second in the state of Chihuahua, following the Colonia Juárez Chihuahua Mexico Temple. Groundbreaking and site dedication were held on January 9, 1999, with Elder Eran A. Call presiding. Notably, the groundbreaking took place on the same day as the Villahermosa Mexico Temple groundbreaking.

The public toured the temple during an open house from February 12–19, 2000. President Gordon B. Hinckley dedicated the temple on February 26–27, 2000, making it the 71st operating temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. During the dedication weekend, President Thomas S. Monson conducted several dedicatory sessions while President Hinckley traveled to dedicate the Hermosillo Sonora Mexico Temple.

Design and Architecture

The Ciudad Juárez Mexico Temple contains approximately 10,700 square feet of floor space. Its exterior is finished with white marble veneer and features a single attached spire topped with an angel Moroni statue. The temple stands at an elevation of approximately 3,709 feet above sea level.

Inside, the temple includes two progressive instruction rooms, two sealing rooms, and one baptistry. Although it is one of the Church's smaller temples, its thoughtful design has allowed it to faithfully serve members on both sides of the U.S.–Mexico border for more than two decades.

Final Thoughts

The Ciudad Juárez Mexico Temple stands as an important symbol of the Church's growth in northern Mexico. Its location near the international border has made temple worship more accessible for thousands of Latter-day Saints in Chihuahua and neighboring West Texas. With its classic design and significant history, the temple remains an important destination for members visiting the region.
