The Charlotte North Carolina Temple is one of the newest temples announced by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Once completed, it will become the second temple in North Carolina, helping serve members throughout the Charlotte metropolitan area and surrounding communities. As one of the fastest-growing regions in the southeastern United States, Charlotte has long been anticipated as a future temple location.
A Brief History
President Russell M. Nelson announced the Charlotte North Carolina Temple during the April 2023 General Conference on April 2, 2023. At the time of the announcement, North Carolina was home to more than 94,000 members of the Church in nearly 180 congregations, reflecting decades of steady growth across the state.
An initial temple site was announced in May 2023 in the community of Weddington. However, on March 23, 2026, the Church announced a new location for the temple at 5926 Matthews-Mint Hill Road in Mint Hill, on a beautiful 7.7-acre property. Plans call for a single-story temple of approximately 30,700 square feet. As of now, the temple remains in the planning phase, and a groundbreaking date has not yet been announced.
What Makes This Temple Unique?
The Charlotte North Carolina Temple will become the second temple in North Carolina, joining the Raleigh North Carolina Temple. It will also provide a much closer temple for thousands of members living in the Charlotte area, reducing travel times for many families across western North Carolina and portions of South Carolina.
One unique aspect of this temple's story is its site relocation. While it is uncommon for a temple location to change after being announced, the Church selected a new property in Mint Hill in 2026 that offers additional space and a prominent location for the future temple.
Although an official rendering has not yet been released, anticipation continues to grow. Members look forward to seeing the architectural design and watching the temple become a new landmark in one of the South's fastest-growing metropolitan areas.
Visiting the Temple
The future Charlotte North Carolina Temple will be located at 5926 Matthews-Mint Hill Road in Mint Hill, just east of downtown Charlotte. Since the temple is still in the planning stages, visitors cannot yet tour the property. Once construction is complete, the Church will host a public open house before the temple is dedicated, giving everyone an opportunity to see the beautiful interior.
