Cebu City Philippines Temple: History, Architecture, and Travel Guide

Where It's Located

The Cebu City Philippines Temple is located on Gorordo Avenue in Barangay Lahug, Cebu City, Philippines. The temple sits on an 11.6-acre site and serves Latter-day Saints throughout the Visayas and Mindanao. The temple complex also includes an arrival center, patron housing, and a distribution center.

Getting There

The nearest major airport is Mactan–Cebu International Airport (CEB), the second-busiest airport in the Philippines. Travelers from the United States typically connect through major Asian hubs such as Manila, Tokyo, Seoul, Taipei, Hong Kong, or Singapore before continuing to Cebu. From the airport, the temple is approximately a 30- to 40-minute drive, depending on traffic.

A Bit of History

The Cebu City Philippines Temple was announced on April 18, 2006, becoming the second temple built in the Philippines, following the Manila Philippines Temple. Groundbreaking and site dedication took place on November 14, 2007, with Elder Dallin H. Oaks presiding.

The temple welcomed visitors during a public open house from May 21 through June 5, 2010. President Thomas S. Monson dedicated the temple on June 13, 2010, making it the 133rd operating temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Today, it serves members from numerous stakes and districts across the Visayas, Masbate Island, and portions of Mindanao.

One notable event in the temple's history occurred after the 2013 Bohol earthquake, when the angel Moroni statue shifted from facing east to facing south. The statue was carefully repositioned to its original orientation in January 2014.

Design and Architecture

The Cebu City Philippines Temple contains approximately 29,556 square feet of floor space. Its exterior is finished with mountain gray granite from China and features a single attached central spire topped with an angel Moroni statue. The spire reaches approximately 140 feet in height, making the temple a prominent landmark in Cebu City.

Inside, the temple includes two progressive instruction rooms, two sealing rooms, and one baptistry. The spacious grounds and tropical landscaping provide a peaceful setting for worship while complementing the surrounding environment.

Final Thoughts

The Cebu City Philippines Temple represents an important milestone in the growth of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Philippines. As the second temple built in the country, it has made temple worship much more accessible for members across the central and southern islands. Its beautiful granite exterior, carefully landscaped grounds, and lasting significance make it a memorable destination for anyone visiting Latter-day Saint temples in Southeast Asia.
