Cape Town South Africa Temple: History, Architecture, and Travel Guide

Where It's Located

The Cape Town South Africa Temple is under construction at 3 Liesbeek Avenue in the Observatory neighborhood of Cape Town, South Africa. The temple sits on a 3.79-acre site next to the Church's former mission office and will also include an arrival center and a meetinghouse.

Because the temple is still under construction, it is not yet open for temple worship or public visits.

Getting There

The nearest major airport is Cape Town International Airport (CPT), South Africa's second-busiest airport. Travelers from the United States typically reach Cape Town by connecting through major international hubs such as London, Amsterdam, Doha, Dubai, or Johannesburg. The temple site is approximately a 20-minute drive from the airport, depending on traffic.

A Bit of History

The Cape Town South Africa Temple was announced by President Russell M. Nelson during the April 2021 General Conference. It will become the third temple in South Africa, following the Johannesburg South Africa Temple and the Durban South Africa Temple. At the time of the announcement, South Africa was home to approximately 69,000 members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in around 195 congregations. Missionary work in South Africa began in 1853, and the Church's first meetinghouse in the country was built in nearby Mowbray in 1916.

The temple's location and official exterior rendering were both released on December 7, 2021. Groundbreaking and site dedication took place on October 25, 2025, with Elder Carlos A. Godoy, President of the Africa South Area, presiding. Construction is progressing steadily, with the foundation completed and the reinforced concrete structural framing now underway.

Design and Architecture

Plans call for a single-story temple containing approximately 9,500 square feet of floor space. The design features a single attached central tower and will include one instruction room, one sealing room, and one baptistry. The temple complex will also include an arrival center and a meetinghouse to serve members throughout the region.

Located in the Observatory neighborhood, the temple has been designed to fit naturally within its urban surroundings while providing a dedicated house of the Lord for members in South Africa's Western Cape. Recent construction updates show the structural walls beginning to rise as the project continues to move forward.

Final Thoughts

The Cape Town South Africa Temple marks another important milestone in the growth of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in southern Africa. Once completed, it will bring temple worship closer to members throughout the Western Cape and become the third operating temple in South Africa. As construction continues, future milestones—including the public open house and dedication—will be announced.
