Cancún Mexico Temple: What We Know So Far

Announcement

The Cancún Mexico Temple was announced by President Russell M. Nelson during the October 2023 General Conference. It will become the 24th house of the Lord announced for Mexico and the first temple in the state of Quintana Roo. At the time of the announcement, Mexico was home to nearly 1.5 million members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in more than 1,800 congregations. Missionary work in Mexico began in 1875.

Current Status

The Cancún Mexico Temple is currently in the planning and approval phase. At this time, the Church has not announced an official temple site, has not released an exterior rendering, and has not announced a groundbreaking date. Construction has not yet begun.

What to Watch for Next

The next major milestone will be the announcement of the temple's official location. After that, the Church is expected to release an exterior rendering, announce a groundbreaking ceremony, and begin construction. As the project progresses, additional announcements will include the public open house and dedication dates.

Nearest Operating Temple

Until the Cancún Mexico Temple is completed, members in the Yucatán Peninsula continue to attend the Mérida Mexico Temple, which is the nearest operating temple to Cancún. The new temple will significantly reduce travel for Latter-day Saints living in Quintana Roo and surrounding areas while becoming the first temple in the state.

Final Thoughts

The Cancún Mexico Temple marks another important milestone in the continued growth of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Mexico. Although the project is still in its early planning stages, the announcement reflects the Church's continued expansion and commitment to making temple worship more accessible. As additional details are released, the Cancún Mexico Temple will become an exciting new addition to the growing number of temples throughout Mexico.
