A Bit of History
The Campinas Brazil Temple was announced on April 3, 1997, by President Gordon B. Hinckley. It became the fourth temple in Brazil and the second in the state of São Paulo, following the São Paulo Brazil Temple. Groundbreaking and site dedication took place on May 1, 1998, with President James E. Faust presiding.
The temple welcomed visitors during a public open house from April 20 through May 11, 2002. President Gordon B. Hinckley dedicated the temple on May 17, 2002, making it the 111th operating temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The temple serves members throughout portions of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Minas Gerais.
During the groundbreaking ceremony, President James E. Faust spoke about the faith and sacrifices of members who contributed to the temple's construction, highlighting the devotion of Latter-day Saints throughout Brazil.
Design and Architecture
The Campinas Brazil Temple contains approximately 48,100 square feet of floor space. Its exterior is finished with light gray Asa Branca granite from the Brazilian state of Ceará and features a single attached central spire topped with an angel Moroni statue. The temple stands at an elevation of approximately 2,446 feet above sea level.
Inside, the temple includes four progressive instruction rooms, three sealing rooms, and one baptistry. Its elevated setting, elegant granite exterior, and panoramic views of Campinas make it one of Brazil's most recognizable temples.
Final Thoughts
The Campinas Brazil Temple has faithfully served Latter-day Saints since 2002 and remains an important landmark in the Church's growth throughout Brazil. Its beautiful hilltop location, classic architecture, and rich history make it a memorable destination for anyone visiting Latter-day Saint temples in South America.
