Calgary Alberta Temple: History, Architecture, and Travel Guide

Where It's Located

The Calgary Alberta Temple is located at 9802 Rocky Ridge Road NW in the Royal Oak community of northwest Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The temple sits on a 10.17-acre site with panoramic views of the city and the nearby Rocky Mountains. It is adjacent to a Church meetinghouse and is conveniently located near major roadways and Calgary's CTrain light rail system.

Getting There

The nearest major airport is Calgary International Airport (YYC), one of Canada's busiest airports. Travelers from the United States can fly nonstop to Calgary from numerous cities, including Denver, Dallas/Fort Worth, Minneapolis, Phoenix, Seattle, Salt Lake City, Los Angeles, and several others. From the airport, the temple is approximately a 30-minute drive, depending on traffic.

A Bit of History

The Calgary Alberta Temple was announced by President Thomas S. Monson during the October 2008 General Conference. It became the eighth temple in Canada and the third temple in Alberta, following the Cardston Alberta Temple and the Edmonton Alberta Temple. At the time of the announcement, more than 75,000 members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints lived throughout Alberta.

Groundbreaking and site dedication took place on May 15, 2010, with Elder Donald L. Hallstrom presiding. Following construction, the temple welcomed the public during an open house from September 29 through October 20, 2012. President Thomas S. Monson dedicated the temple on October 28, 2012, making it the 140th operating temple of the Church.

One memorable milestone during construction occurred on January 12, 2012, when hundreds of local Church members gathered before sunrise to watch the angel Moroni statue be lifted into place atop the temple's spire.

Design and Architecture

The Calgary Alberta Temple contains approximately 33,000 square feet of floor space. Its exterior is finished with gray granite from China and features a single attached central spire topped with an angel Moroni statue. The temple rises approximately 114 feet 9 inches above the surrounding landscape.

Inside, the temple includes two progressive instruction rooms, three sealing rooms, and one baptistry. The temple's elevated location and carefully landscaped grounds provide beautiful views of Calgary while creating a peaceful setting for worship.

Final Thoughts

The Calgary Alberta Temple is an important landmark for Latter-day Saints in western Canada. Its hilltop setting, elegant granite exterior, and panoramic views make it one of Alberta's most recognizable temples. Whether you're visiting Calgary or exploring temples throughout Canada, the Calgary Alberta Temple is a beautiful example of the continued growth of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
