Cagayan de Oro Philippines Temple: History, Architecture, and Travel Guide

Where It's Located

The Cagayan de Oro Philippines Temple is under construction at Lot 2163-c and Lot 2163-d, Rosario Limketkai Avenue in Cagayan de Oro City, Misamis, Philippines. The temple sits on a 4.9-acre site and will also include an arrival center, patron housing, and a distribution center.

Because the temple is still under construction, it is not yet open for temple worship or public visits.

Getting There

The nearest major airport is Laguindingan International Airport (CGY), which serves Cagayan de Oro and surrounding areas in northern Mindanao. Travelers from the United States typically reach Cagayan de Oro by connecting through Manila or Cebu before taking a domestic flight to Laguindingan Airport. From the airport, the temple site is approximately a 45-minute drive, depending on traffic.

A Bit of History

The Cagayan de Oro Philippines Temple was announced by President Russell M. Nelson during the April 2018 General Conference. It will become the seventh temple built in the Philippines and the second temple on the island of Mindanao, following the Davao Philippines Temple. At the time of the announcement, the Philippines had approximately 750,000 members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints organized into more than 100 stakes and dozens of districts.

The temple site was announced on December 18, 2023, and an official exterior rendering was released on July 8, 2024. Groundbreaking and site dedication took place on August 31, 2024, with Elder Carlos G. Revillo Jr., President of the Philippines Area, presiding. Construction has continued steadily, with recent progress including completion of the exterior stone cladding, installation of decorative art-glass windows, and extensive landscaping.

Design and Architecture

Plans call for a two-story temple containing approximately 18,449 square feet of floor space. The design features a single attached end tower and will include two instruction rooms, two sealing rooms, and one baptistry. The temple complex will also include an arrival center, patron housing, and a distribution center to serve members traveling from across Mindanao.

The temple's elegant design incorporates a prominent tower and carefully landscaped grounds that complement its tropical setting. As construction advances, finishing work has shifted to the interior, stained-glass windows, walkways, and surrounding landscaping.

Final Thoughts

The Cagayan de Oro Philippines Temple represents another important milestone in the continued growth of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Philippines. As the second temple on Mindanao, it will bring temple worship much closer to thousands of members throughout the region. With construction progressing steadily, the temple is becoming a beautiful new landmark that will bless generations of Latter-day Saints for years to come.
