Announcement
The Busan Korea Temple was announced by President Russell M. Nelson during the October 2022 General Conference. It will become the second temple in South Korea, joining the Seoul Korea Temple, which was dedicated in 1985. At the time of the announcement, nearly 90,000 members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints lived in South Korea in approximately 100 congregations. Busan, the country's largest port city, has long been an important center for the Church in southeastern Korea.
Current Status
The Busan Korea Temple is currently in the planning and approval phase. At this time, the Church has not announced an official temple site, has not released an exterior rendering, and has not announced a groundbreaking date. The project remains in its earliest stages as planning continues.
What to Watch for Next
The next major milestone will be the announcement of the temple's official location. After that, the Church is expected to release an exterior rendering, announce a groundbreaking ceremony, and begin construction. As work progresses, future announcements will include details about the public open house and dedication.
Nearest Operating Temple
Until the Busan Korea Temple is completed, members throughout South Korea continue to attend the Seoul Korea Temple, the country's only operating temple. The new temple in Busan will significantly reduce travel for members living in the southeastern portion of the country, including those in the Busan, Daegu, Ulsan, and Changwon areas.
Final Thoughts
The Busan Korea Temple marks another important milestone in the growth of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in South Korea. Although the project is still in the planning stage, its announcement reflects the continued strengthening of the Church in the country. As additional details are released, the Busan Korea Temple will become an exciting new chapter in the history of the Church in Korea.
