Buenos Aires City Center Argentina Temple: What We Know So Far

Announcement

The Buenos Aires City Center Argentina Temple was announced by President Russell M. Nelson during the October 2022 General Conference. It will become Argentina's sixth temple and the second temple in the Greater Buenos Aires metropolitan area, joining the Buenos Aires Argentina Temple. At the time of the announcement, Argentina was home to approximately 475,000 members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in more than 725 congregations.

Current Status

The temple is planned for a 1.56-acre site at the intersection of Avenida Córdoba and Reconquista in the San Nicolás neighborhood of downtown Buenos Aires. The property, formerly used as a parking lot, places the temple in the heart of Argentina's capital. An official exterior rendering was released in June 2025, and an updated rendering with a redesigned spire was released in April 2026. Plans call for a multistory temple featuring a single attached central spire and a reproduction of the Christus statue on the grounds.

The project remains in the planning and approval phase. Although a legal injunction temporarily delayed the authorization process, it was overturned in May 2026, allowing the Church to continue pursuing the required city approvals and building permits. No groundbreaking date has been announced, and construction has not yet begun.

What to Watch for Next

The next major milestone will be the announcement of a groundbreaking ceremony. Once construction begins, the Church is expected to provide updates on the building's progress, followed by announcements for the public open house and dedication as the project nears completion.

Nearest Operating Temple

Until the Buenos Aires City Center Argentina Temple is completed, members in the metropolitan area continue to attend the Buenos Aires Argentina Temple, which was dedicated in 1986 and serves members throughout the region. The new downtown temple will become the second operating temple in Greater Buenos Aires, providing additional temple capacity for one of the Church's largest membership centers in South America.

Final Thoughts

The Buenos Aires City Center Argentina Temple represents another important milestone in the growth of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Argentina. Its central downtown location and modern design will bring a new house of the Lord to the heart of the nation's capital. While the project is still in the planning stage, recent progress in the approval process brings it one step closer to construction and eventual completion.
