Budapest Hungary Temple: History, Architecture, and Travel Guide

Where It's Located

The Budapest Hungary Temple is under construction at the intersection of Kocsis Sándor út and Borsikafű utca in the Harsánylejtő neighborhood of Budapest, Hungary. The temple sits on a 5.92-acre site in the city's Buda hills and will also include an arrival center and patron housing.

Because the temple is still under construction, it is not yet open for temple worship or public visits.

Getting There

The nearest major airport is Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport (BUD), Hungary's primary international airport. Travelers from the United States can reach Budapest by connecting through major European hubs such as London, Paris, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Munich, or Vienna. From the airport, the temple site is approximately a 35- to 45-minute drive, depending on traffic.

A Bit of History

The Budapest Hungary Temple was announced by President Russell M. Nelson during the April 2019 General Conference. It will become the first temple in Hungary and the sixteenth temple in Europe. At the time of the announcement, Hungary was home to approximately 5,250 members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, organized into one stake and two districts. Before the temple's announcement, members often traveled many hours to the Freiberg Germany Temple to participate in temple worship.

The temple's location was announced on October 9, 2023, and an official exterior rendering was released on March 4, 2024. Groundbreaking and site dedication took place on June 21, 2025, with Elder Rubén V. Alliaud, President of the Europe Central Area, presiding. Construction is progressing steadily, with the reinforced concrete structural frame now in place and preparations continuing for the temple's steeple.

Design and Architecture

Plans call for a single-story temple containing approximately 18,000 square feet of floor space. The design features a single attached central spire and will stand at an elevation of approximately 474 feet above sea level. The temple complex will also include an arrival center and patron housing to accommodate members traveling from across Hungary and neighboring countries.

Situated among the hills of the Harsánylejtő area, the temple's design blends with its natural surroundings while creating a prominent landmark for the Church in Hungary. As construction advances, the temple's silhouette is becoming increasingly visible across the neighborhood.

Final Thoughts

The Budapest Hungary Temple marks a historic milestone for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Hungary. As the nation's first temple, it will bring temple worship much closer to members who have faithfully traveled long distances for many years. Its beautiful hillside location and growing presence on the Budapest skyline symbolize the continued growth of the Church in Central Europe. As construction continues, future milestones—including the public open house and dedication—will be announced.
