Where It's Located
The Brisbane Australia Temple is located at 200 River Terrace in the Kangaroo Point neighborhood of Brisbane, Queensland. Perched atop the scenic Kangaroo Point Cliffs, the temple overlooks the Brisbane River and the city's central business district. The temple sits adjacent to a Church meetinghouse, and its beautifully landscaped grounds are open to visitors who want to enjoy the views and peaceful surroundings.
Getting There
The nearest major airport is Brisbane Airport (BNE), Queensland's primary international airport. Travelers from the United States can fly nonstop from Los Angeles or connect through major hubs such as Sydney, Auckland, or other Pacific cities. From Brisbane Airport, the temple is approximately a 20- to 25-minute drive, depending on traffic.
A Bit of History
The Brisbane Australia Temple was announced on July 20, 1998, making it the second temple announced for Australia. Although it ultimately became the fifth temple built in the country, its construction was delayed while the Church worked with local officials regarding building height, lighting, and traffic concerns. To accommodate these requests, the roof pitch of the adjacent meetinghouse was lowered, and the temple platform was reduced in height.
Groundbreaking and site dedication took place on May 26, 2001, with Kenneth Johnson presiding. Following construction, the temple welcomed the public during an open house held from May 10 through June 7, 2003. President Gordon B. Hinckley dedicated the temple on June 15, 2003, making it the 115th operating temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
To make room for the new temple complex, the historic Brisbane Australia Stake Center was demolished and replaced with a new meetinghouse constructed alongside the temple. Today, the temple serves members throughout Queensland and northeastern New South Wales.
Design and Architecture
The Brisbane Australia Temple occupies a 0.86-acre site and contains approximately 10,700 square feet of floor space. The exterior is finished with gray granite and features a single attached spire topped with an angel Moroni statue. The temple rises approximately 76 feet above the surrounding landscape.
Inside, the temple includes two progressive instruction rooms, two sealing rooms, and one baptistry. Despite its relatively compact size, the temple's elevated location overlooking the Brisbane River makes it one of Australia's most picturesque temples.
Final Thoughts
The Brisbane Australia Temple has served Latter-day Saints in Queensland for more than two decades. Its dramatic setting above the Brisbane River, beautiful granite exterior, and important place in the Church's history in Australia make it a memorable destination for anyone visiting Latter-day Saint temples in the Pacific region.
