Where It's Located
The Brasília Brazil Temple is located at SGAN 612 – Módulo C, Asa Norte in Brasília, the capital of Brazil. The temple sits on a six-acre site in the city's northern district and serves members throughout the Federal District and surrounding regions. The temple complex also includes patron housing and an arrival center.
Getting There
The nearest major airport is Brasília–Presidente Juscelino Kubitschek International Airport (BSB), one of Brazil's busiest airports. Travelers from the United States typically connect through major Brazilian gateways such as São Paulo or Rio de Janeiro before continuing to Brasília. The temple is approximately a 20- to 30-minute drive from the airport, depending on traffic.
A Bit of History
The Brasília Brazil Temple was announced by President Thomas S. Monson during the April 2017 General Conference. At the time of the announcement, Brazil had more than 1.3 million members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and the temple was planned to bring temple worship closer to members living in Brazil's vast interior.
An official exterior rendering was released in February 2020, and groundbreaking took place on September 26, 2020, with Elder Adilson de Paula Parrella presiding. Following nearly three years of construction, the temple welcomed visitors during a public open house from August 12 through September 2, 2023. Elder Neil L. Andersen of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles dedicated the temple on September 17, 2023, making it the tenth dedicated temple in Brazil and the first in the Federal District.
The temple serves members from numerous stakes and districts in the Federal District, Goiás, Tocantins, western Minas Gerais, and western Bahia, significantly reducing travel for thousands of Latter-day Saints in central Brazil.
Design and Architecture
The Brasília Brazil Temple contains approximately 25,000 square feet of floor space and features a single attached central spire. Its exterior is clad in white Brazilian marble, creating a bright, elegant appearance that complements Brasília's renowned modernist architecture. The design includes numerous arches inspired by the architectural style for which the nation's capital is famous.
Inside, the temple includes two instruction rooms, two sealing rooms, and one baptistry. The thoughtfully designed complex also provides patron housing and an arrival center for members traveling from across central Brazil.
Final Thoughts
The Brasília Brazil Temple is a significant milestone in the continued growth of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Brazil. As the first temple in the nation's capital and the Federal District, it has brought temple worship much closer to thousands of members across central Brazil. Its distinctive modern design, beautiful white marble exterior, and important role in serving a vast region make it a memorable destination for anyone visiting Latter-day Saint temples in South America.
