Where It's Located
The Bogotá Colombia Temple is located at Carrera 46 No. 127-45 in Bogotá, Colombia's capital city. Situated in the northern part of the city at an elevation of more than 8,300 feet above sea level, the temple serves members throughout much of Colombia. The temple grounds also include patron housing, an arrival center, and a distribution center.
Getting There
The nearest major airport is El Dorado International Airport (BOG), Colombia's busiest airport and the country's primary international gateway. Travelers from the United States can find nonstop flights from several major U.S. cities, including Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, Atlanta, Houston, Dallas, New York, and others. From the airport, the temple is approximately a 30- to 40-minute drive, depending on traffic.
A Bit of History
The Bogotá Colombia Temple was announced by President Gordon B. Hinckley on April 7, 1984. It became the first temple in Colombia and the fifth temple built in South America. Because of challenges in locating and acquiring a suitable property, more than nine years passed between the temple's announcement and its groundbreaking.
Groundbreaking and site dedication took place on June 26, 1993, with Elder William R. Bradford presiding. After construction was completed, the public toured the temple during an open house held from March 27 through April 18, 1999. President Gordon B. Hinckley dedicated the temple during multiple sessions held April 24–26, 1999.
For nearly two decades, the Bogotá Colombia Temple was the only operating temple in the country, serving members throughout Colombia before additional temples were announced and constructed in other regions. Today, it continues to serve stakes and districts across much of the nation.
Design and Architecture
The Bogotá Colombia Temple sits on a 3.71-acre site and contains approximately 53,500 square feet of floor space. The exterior is finished with Asa Branca Brazilian granite, giving the temple a bright, elegant appearance. A single attached end spire topped with an angel Moroni statue rises approximately 124 feet above the surrounding landscape.
Inside, the temple features four progressive instruction rooms, three sealing rooms, and one baptistry. Its spacious design reflected the needs of members throughout Colombia and neighboring areas when it was first constructed, and it continues to play a central role in temple worship in the country.
Final Thoughts
The Bogotá Colombia Temple holds a special place in the history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in South America. As Colombia's first temple, it has blessed generations of members while helping support the Church's remarkable growth throughout the country. Its rich history, beautiful granite exterior, and enduring significance make it a meaningful destination for anyone visiting Latter-day Saint temples in South America.
