Where It's Located
The Birmingham England Temple is under construction at 185–187 Penns Lane in Royal Sutton Coldfield, a suburb northeast of Birmingham, England. The temple is being built on a 2.7-acre site adjacent to an existing Church meetinghouse that formerly included the offices of the England Birmingham Mission. The completed temple complex will also include patron housing and arrival facilities.
Because the temple is still under construction, it is not yet open for temple worship or public visits.
Getting There
The nearest major airport is Birmingham Airport (BHX), which serves destinations throughout Europe and offers international connections. Travelers from the United States can reach Birmingham through nonstop flights to London or other major European hubs before connecting by air or rail. From Birmingham Airport, the temple site in Sutton Coldfield is approximately a 25- to 30-minute drive.
A Bit of History
The Birmingham England Temple was announced by President Russell M. Nelson during the April 2022 General Conference. It will become the third temple in England, following the London England Temple and the Preston England Temple.
The temple's location was announced in December 2023, and an official exterior rendering was released in February 2024. After planning approval was granted by Birmingham City Council, groundbreaking and site dedication took place on March 22, 2025, with Elder Scott D. Whiting, President of the Europe North Area, presiding. Construction is currently progressing, with structural steel framing and exterior wall construction underway.
Once completed, the temple will improve access to temple worship for members throughout the Midlands and surrounding areas while joining the growing number of temples in the British Isles.
Design and Architecture
Plans call for a single-story temple containing approximately 10,800 square feet of floor space. The temple will feature a single attached central spire and will include one instruction room, one sealing room, and one baptistry. Patron housing and arrival facilities are also part of the project.
The temple's exterior design draws inspiration from historic English parish churches, blending traditional Latter-day Saint temple architecture with architectural elements commonly found throughout England. The result is a design that reflects both the Church's architectural heritage and the character of the surrounding region.
Final Thoughts
The Birmingham England Temple represents another important milestone in the growth of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the United Kingdom. As England's third temple, it will bring temple worship closer to members across the Midlands while adding a beautiful new house of the Lord inspired by traditional English architecture. As construction continues, future milestones—including the public open house and dedication—will be announced.
