Birmingham Alabama Temple: History, Unique Features, and Visitor Guide

Nestled on a peaceful, tree-covered hillside in Gardendale just north of Birmingham, the Birmingham Alabama Temple was the first temple built in the state of Alabama. Since its dedication in 2000, it has blessed members throughout Alabama by bringing temple worship much closer to home. Its beautiful marble exterior, serene grounds, and rich history make it one of the South's most cherished temples.

A Brief History

President Gordon B. Hinckley announced the Birmingham Alabama Temple on September 11, 1998. Groundbreaking took place on October 9, 1999, despite rainy weather that didn't discourage the hundreds of faithful members who gathered for the ceremony.

Before the temple was dedicated, more than 21,000 visitors toured the building during a week-long public open house. President Hinckley dedicated the temple on September 3, 2000, making it the 98th dedicated temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the first temple in Alabama.

What Makes This Temple Unique?

The Birmingham Alabama Temple is beautifully situated on a wooded hillside overlooking the surrounding community. Its exterior is finished with Imperial Danby White Marble, quarried in Vermont, giving the temple a bright and timeless appearance that stands out among the surrounding trees.

One of the temple's most beloved traditions takes place each Christmas season. Nativity-themed statues are displayed across the front lawn and illuminated each evening, creating a peaceful and inspiring display that has become a favorite for many local families.

The temple is also recognized for its beautifully maintained landscaping. In 2008, the City of Gardendale honored the temple with a Beautification Award, recognizing the care and attention given to its grounds. Mature trees, flowering shrubs, and carefully designed landscaping make the property a peaceful place to visit throughout the year.

Visiting the Temple

The Birmingham Alabama Temple is located at 1927 Mount Olive Boulevard in Gardendale, just off Interstate 65. Although there is no visitors' center, arrival center, patron housing, or on-site distribution center, the beautifully landscaped grounds are open to visitors and provide a quiet place for reflection. Spring and fall are especially beautiful times to visit, while the Christmas nativity display offers a unique seasonal experience.
