Bengaluru India Temple: History, Architecture, and Travel Guide

Where It's Located

The Bengaluru India Temple is located at 2-B ITPL Main Road in the Garudachar Palya neighborhood of Mahadevapura, Bengaluru, Karnataka. The temple is being built on the site of the existing Church service center and stake center in one of India's largest technology and business districts. The 1.62-acre property will also include a two-level meetinghouse, administrative offices, a distribution center, and patron housing.

Because the temple is still under construction, it is not yet open for temple worship or public visits.

Getting There

The nearest major airport is Kempegowda International Airport (BLR), which serves Bengaluru with numerous domestic and international flights. Travelers from the United States typically reach Bengaluru by connecting through major international hubs such as Doha, Dubai, London, Frankfurt, Singapore, or other major Asian or Middle Eastern cities. From the airport, the temple site is approximately a 45- to 60-minute drive, depending on traffic.

A Bit of History

The Bengaluru India Temple was announced by President Russell M. Nelson during the April 2018 General Conference. It is the first temple ever announced for India, marking a historic milestone for members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the country. Shortly after the announcement, President Nelson visited India and explained that the decision to announce the temple came through divine inspiration during General Conference.

An official exterior rendering was released in January 2020, and groundbreaking took place on December 2, 2020. Elder Robert K. William, an Area Seventy, presided over the groundbreaking ceremony. Plans call for a temple that will serve Church members across India, where there are approximately 13,500 members organized into four stakes and three districts.

Construction has reached the stage where the concrete structural frame has been completed. However, construction is currently paused, and the Church has not announced future construction milestones, an open house, or a dedication date.

Design and Architecture

The Bengaluru India Temple will contain approximately 38,670 square feet of floor space. Its design features a soaring central spire surrounded by four smaller spires, creating one of the most distinctive temple silhouettes in Asia. The temple will stand at an elevation of approximately 2,958 feet above sea level.

The temple complex will include a two-level meetinghouse, Church administrative offices, a distribution center, and patron housing in addition to the temple itself. Once completed, it will become the first house of the Lord in India.

Final Thoughts

The Bengaluru India Temple represents a historic milestone for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. As the first temple in India, it will bring temple blessings much closer to members throughout one of the world's most populous nations. Although construction is currently paused, the temple remains a significant symbol of the Church's growth in India, and members continue to look forward to the day when it is completed and dedicated.
