Bakersfield California Temple: History, Unique Features, and Visitor Guide

The Bakersfield California Temple is one of the newest temples announced by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Located in California's Central Valley, the temple will bless thousands of members by providing a house of the Lord closer to home. Although construction has not yet begun, the temple already represents the continued growth of the Church throughout California.

A Brief History

President Russell M. Nelson announced the Bakersfield California Temple during the April 2023 General Conference on April 2, 2023. Just a few months later, the Church announced a 13.07-acre site at the northwest corner of Stockdale Highway and Jewetta Avenue in Bakersfield.

In January 2024, the Church released the first exterior rendering of the temple, giving members and the community their first look at its elegant design. The project is currently in the planning and approval phase, and a groundbreaking date has not yet been announced.

What Makes This Temple Unique?

The Bakersfield California Temple will feature a beautiful single attached central tower rising more than 123 feet, making it a striking landmark in western Bakersfield. Plans call for a temple of approximately 29,630 square feet with two instruction rooms, two sealing rooms, and one baptistry. A distribution center and meetinghouse will also be located on the property.

One of the things that makes this temple especially significant is its location in California's Central Valley. While several temples already serve California, the Bakersfield Temple will make temple worship much more accessible for members living in Kern County and surrounding communities, reducing travel time for many families. It will become the 12th temple announced for California, highlighting the remarkable growth of the Church across the state.

As planning continues, the Church has worked closely with city leaders and local residents to move the project forward while sharing information about the temple's design and community impact.

Visiting the Temple

The future temple site is located at 12310 Stockdale Highway in Bakersfield, California. Although the temple is not yet under construction, members and visitors can drive by the property and watch as progress continues in the coming months and years. Once completed, the temple grounds will provide a peaceful place for worship, reflection, and beautiful photographs. The public will also be invited to tour the temple during its open house before it is dedicated.
