The Austin Texas Temple is one of the newest temples being built by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Located in Cedar Park, just northwest of downtown Austin, the temple will serve thousands of members throughout Central Texas. While it has not yet been dedicated, excitement continues to grow as construction progresses on what will become the Church's seventh temple in Texas.
A Brief History
President Russell M. Nelson announced the Austin Texas Temple during the April 2022 General Conference on April 3, 2022. Later that year, the Church selected a beautiful 10.6-acre site adjacent to an existing meetinghouse in Cedar Park.
Ground was officially broken on August 17, 2024, with Elder Michael A. Dunn presiding over the ceremony. In his dedicatory prayer, he invited members to "stand firmly on holy ground" as the temple begins serving future generations of Latter-day Saints. The temple remains under construction, and open house and dedication dates have not yet been announced.
What Makes This Temple Unique?
Although the Austin Texas Temple is still under construction, several features already make it stand out.
The temple will feature a single attached central tower and an elegant exterior finished with Spanish Rosa Porrinho granite and Creme Savage limestone, both imported from Portugal. These light-colored materials will give the temple a timeless appearance while complementing the beauty of the surrounding Texas Hill Country.
Another unique aspect is its location. Cedar Park is one of the fastest-growing communities in Texas, making this temple an important addition for members throughout the Austin metropolitan area and Central Texas. As the Church continues to grow in the state, the Austin Texas Temple will help reduce travel times for many families who currently attend other Texas temples.
Construction has progressed steadily, with exterior stonework, roofing, and parking areas taking shape. As the building nears completion, it is already becoming a recognizable landmark in the community.
Visiting the Temple
The Austin Texas Temple is located at 1801 East Park Street in Cedar Park, Texas. While the temple is not yet open for visitors, many people enjoy driving by the construction site to watch its progress. Once completed, the beautifully landscaped grounds will provide a peaceful place for worship, reflection, and photography. Open house dates will be announced after construction is finished, giving the public an opportunity to tour the temple before it is dedicated.
