Auckland New Zealand Temple: History, Architecture, and Travel Guide

Where It's Located

The Auckland New Zealand Temple is located at 19 Redoubt Road in Goodwood Heights, Auckland, New Zealand. The temple sits on an elevated 11.37-acre site overlooking the Auckland Southern Motorway, making it one of the city's most recognizable landmarks. It stands adjacent to the New Zealand Missionary Training Center and a local stake center, with the historic St. Johns Redoubt reserve nearby.

Getting There

The nearest major airport is Auckland Airport (AKL), New Zealand's largest international airport. Travelers from the United States can find nonstop flights to Auckland from cities including Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Honolulu, while many other itineraries connect through Australia or other Pacific destinations. The temple is approximately a 15- to 20-minute drive from the airport, depending on traffic.

A Bit of History

The Auckland New Zealand Temple was announced by President Russell M. Nelson during the October 2018 General Conference. It became the second temple in New Zealand, following the Hamilton New Zealand Temple, which had served members throughout the country since 1958. At the time of the announcement, Church membership in New Zealand exceeded 114,000 members, with significant growth in the Auckland area.

In May 2019, President Nelson announced the temple's exact location during a devotional in Auckland. An official rendering was released in March 2020, and groundbreaking took place on June 13, 2020, with Elder Ian S. Ardern presiding over the ceremony.

Following nearly five years of construction, the temple welcomed visitors during a public open house from February 27 through March 22, 2025. Elder Patrick Kearon of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles dedicated the temple on April 13, 2025, making it the 203rd operating temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Design and Architecture

The Auckland New Zealand Temple features a two-story steel structure with granite exterior cladding and a single attached end spire rising approximately 177 feet above the surrounding landscape. The building contains 45,456 square feet of floor space, making it one of the larger temples in the Pacific region. Inside are four instruction rooms, three sealing rooms, and one baptistry.

The temple's design incorporates many elements inspired by New Zealand's natural beauty and cultural heritage. Decorative motifs include native plants such as the kōwhai flower, pōhutukawa tree, manuka tree, kauri tree, and silver fern. Interior colors reflect the blues and greens of the paua shell, while Māori basket-weave patterns appear throughout the design. Green quartzite flooring recalls New Zealand jade (pounamu), and white marble symbolizes Aotearoa, the Māori name for New Zealand meaning "the land of the long white cloud." Art Deco influences were also incorporated to reflect the architectural character of the surrounding region.

Final Thoughts

The Auckland New Zealand Temple represents an important milestone for Latter-day Saints in New Zealand. As the nation's second temple, it brings temple worship closer to thousands of members in the country's largest metropolitan area. With its prominent location, meaningful cultural design, and impressive architecture, the Auckland New Zealand Temple is a beautiful addition to the growing number of temples throughout the Pacific.
