Where It's Located
The Antofagasta Chile Temple is located at Avenida de Las Palmeras 44 in Antofagasta, a coastal city in northern Chile along the Pacific Ocean. The temple serves members throughout northern Chile and has made temple worship much more accessible for Latter-day Saints in the region.
Getting There
The nearest major airport is Andrés Sabella Gálvez International Airport (ANF), located just north of Antofagasta. The airport offers regular domestic service from Santiago as well as connections to several other Chilean cities. Travelers from the United States typically fly into Santiago International Airport (SCL) before taking a connecting flight to Antofagasta. The airport is only a short drive from the temple.
A Bit of History
The Antofagasta Chile Temple was announced by President Russell M. Nelson during the April 2019 General Conference. Before its announcement, many members in northern Chile traveled approximately 830 miles to the Santiago Chile Temple to participate in temple ordinances.
The temple site was officially announced in October 2020, and an exterior rendering was released the same day. Groundbreaking and site dedication took place on November 27, 2020, with Elder Juan Pablo Villar presiding.
Following several years of construction, a public open house was held from May 14 through May 24, 2025. The temple was dedicated on June 15, 2025, by Elder Gary E. Stevenson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, becoming the third dedicated temple in Chile.
Design and Architecture
The Antofagasta Chile Temple sits on a two-acre site and features a Spanish Colonial-inspired design. Its exterior is finished with cream-colored Turkish limestone, giving the building a bright, timeless appearance.
The temple includes a single attached end tower that rises approximately 116 feet above the surrounding landscape. Inside, the 26,163-square-foot building contains two instruction rooms, two sealing rooms, and one baptistry. Patron housing is also available on the temple grounds.
Final Thoughts
The Antofagasta Chile Temple marks an important milestone for members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in northern Chile. Its dedication significantly reduced travel distances for thousands of members and added another beautiful temple to South America. Whether you're planning a future temple trip or simply learning about temples around the world, the Antofagasta Chile Temple is a meaningful destination with a rich history and distinctive architectural style.
