Antananarivo Madagascar Temple: Construction Progress, History, and What to Know

Where It's Located

The Antananarivo Madagascar Temple is being constructed in Antananarivo, the capital and largest city of Madagascar. The temple site is located in the Commune Ambohibao area of Antehiroka on Lalana Général Andrimahazo, where an existing Church meetinghouse is situated. The property covers approximately 9.8 acres and is located near the U.S. Embassy.

Because the temple remains under construction, it is not yet open for temple worship or public visits.

Getting There

The closest international airport is Ivato International Airport (TNR), Madagascar's primary international gateway. The airport serves flights from major hubs including Addis Ababa, Nairobi, Istanbul, Paris, Johannesburg, Dubai, Mauritius, and Réunion, making it the primary entry point for travelers coming from the United States. Most U.S. visitors will reach Madagascar through one or more international connections before arriving in Antananarivo.

A Bit of History

The Antananarivo Madagascar Temple was announced during the October 2021 General Conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by President Russell M. Nelson.

The temple's location was officially revealed in December 2023, when plans were released for a temple to be built on the existing Church property in Antehiroka.

Groundbreaking and site dedication took place on March 15, 2025, with Elder Denelson Silva, First Counselor in the Africa South Area Presidency, presiding over the ceremony. Construction has since progressed to foundation work, marking another important milestone toward bringing a temple to Madagascar.

When completed, the temple will serve more than 17,000 Latter-day Saints living throughout Madagascar, eliminating the need for many members to travel to another country to participate in temple ordinances.

Design and Architecture

Plans call for a single-story temple containing approximately 10,000 square feet of floor space. The design includes a single attached spire and will feature one instruction room, one sealing room, and one baptistry.

In addition to the temple itself, the property will include patron housing and arrival facilities. The temple will occupy a 9.8-acre site, providing space for the building and surrounding grounds as construction continues.

Final Thoughts

Although the Antananarivo Madagascar Temple is still under construction, it represents a significant milestone for members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Madagascar. As work continues, this temple will become the nation's first house of the Lord, bringing temple blessings much closer to thousands of members across the island. Travelers planning a future visit can look forward to following its progress as additional construction milestones, including open house and dedication dates, are announced.
