Albuquerque New Mexico Temple: History, Unique Features, and Visitor Guide

The Albuquerque New Mexico Temple was the first temple built in New Mexico and serves members across much of the state and parts of southern Colorado. Nestled against the beautiful Sandia Mountains, the temple is known for its peaceful setting, elegant design, and beautiful desert landscaping. Whether you're planning your first visit or adding another temple to your journey, this temple offers a memorable experience.

A Brief History

The Albuquerque New Mexico Temple was announced on April 4, 1997, during General Conference. Ground was broken on June 20, 1998, and less than two years later, President Gordon B. Hinckley dedicated the temple on March 5, 2000. It became the 73rd operating temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. During the public open house, approximately 70,000 visitors toured the temple before its dedication.

What Makes This Temple Unique?

One of the first things visitors notice is the temple's location overlooking Albuquerque with the Sandia Mountains creating a stunning backdrop. The exterior is finished with Desert Rose precast concrete accented by Texas Pearl granite, giving the building warm tones that blend beautifully with the surrounding New Mexico landscape. A single spire topped with the angel Moroni completes the temple's elegant design.

The temple sits on an 8.5-acre site filled with carefully maintained desert landscaping. Because the area experiences strong mountain winds, the temple's original hinged front doors were eventually replaced with automatic sliding glass doors to improve accessibility and daily operation. In 2019, the former kitchen and cafeteria area was remodeled into additional office space to better meet the temple's needs.

Visiting the Temple

The temple is located at 10301 San Francisco Road NE in Albuquerque and serves members from ten stakes throughout New Mexico and southern Colorado. A distribution center is located on the temple grounds, making it convenient for members needing temple clothing or garments. While there is no visitors' center or patron housing, the beautifully landscaped grounds are open for visitors to enjoy and photograph.

The temple is especially beautiful during sunrise and sunset when the warm New Mexico light reflects off the exterior and the nearby Sandia Mountains create a spectacular backdrop.
